The aim

RCI Library opened some years ago and functioned for a while, but from various reasons, the activity decreased gradually.We want to transform the current library space to best serve a growing community. This research is part of the participatory design project "Library on Stage", developed by RCI London for London Festival of Architecture 2020.

Our aims is to create an open and inclusive platform celebrating the joy of reading.
Empower the children, culturally and intellectually. Provide opportunities for social interaction.
Stimulate collective action and change. Build a stronger community, engaged and connected.

Project Methodology

• Research - a questionnaire to help us better understand the needs and wishes of the potentials users.
• Action Research - interactive & participative (online) co-designing workshops with children and parents. 
• Activation - an exhibition with the children’s works and discussions around it. 
• Design - creating a coherent, feasible and engaging solution for the room.
• Re-opening - a monthly program of events to grow the number of users and to enhance the sense of a new community.

A series of interactive & participative (online) co-designing workshops with children and parents, from which we remind 'Collecting Stories: Design Workshop' - a workshop in which we got the children involved in re-imagining the library space by sharing their ideas for what type of design they would like to experience and what kind of activities they would dream of having.

At the beginning of June, we launched an online questionnaire focusing on the Library on Stage project, but also targeting various aspects of RCI London's activities, in order to understand the needs and desires of the potential library users; it was open all month and was distributed through all RCI London communication channels and in various online groups / communities of Romanians in London (and UK); we collected concrete suggestions related to the transformation of the library and we inaugurated a dialogue channel with potential partners in activating the space; subsequently, we drafted a report in which we centralized and evaluated the responses received and made a number of suggestions.
